Melody Serra-OES/BikeSource Sponsored (Expert 40+)
I am excited to be part of the OES/BikeSource mountain bike team for 2008! I’ll be racing in the expert women 40+ category. This is my third year racing XC mountain bikes. I also competed for 2 years in triathlon and duathlon.
My best racing accomplishments include being the 2007 Colorado State Champion and MSC Series Champion in my division and also the Overall Female winner of the 2002 Tenderfoot Duathlon in Salida, CO.
My husband Jack is my bike mechanic and the person who got me started in mountain biking back in the mid-90’s. We have 2 children: Erin, age 11 and Sam, age 9.
When I am not on my bike, you can usually find me ice skating at the local rink, knitting or driving a delivery truck for FedEx Ground.
No Fear!

J Bretz-OES/BikeSource (Sport 40-49)
J joined the team this spring to find improvement over previous year’s results. “I’ve always finished somewhere in the middle of the pack, and I want to improve that”. I have never trained with consistency or a plan. Working with Rob and being part of a Team Optimize has added structure and given me more motivation. I believe this will make me a better biker and better racer. J will race the Winter Park series and is the owner of Excel roofing.

Kyle Gustafson-OES/BikeSource (Beginner age 29)
Kyle Gustafson is relatively new to mountain biking in Colorado. He grew up in Jacksonville, FL, but did not discover mountain biking till he was in college at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. There he discovered the focus, basic techniques, and fitness that the sport demands. His passion grew for the sport despite numerous bruises, cuts, and broken bones he sustained while learning what he was capable of achieving and what obstacles may still require, “a little work.” Kyle moved to Denver two years ago after completing his graduate degree in International Affairs with emphasis in Economics. He currently works in banking and likes a job with few occupational hazards. He prefers to endure those on the weekends outdoors in the mountains.
The outdoors is like a second home to this enthusiast who enjoys all sports. Particularly, cycling, snowboarding, mountain running, golf, triathlons, surfing, and scuba diving are activities that take up a lot of his free time. This will be Kyle’s Rookie Season for mountain biking being that he has only competed in one race, “The Fire Cracker 50”, in Breckenridge, CO. Most of his race experience is in running events and triathlons. His competitive nature is sure to develop as his experience level rises with each race. Kyle admits he has a lot to learn, but feels honored to have a spot on such an experienced, fun, and positive team.
Philanthropy is also a passion of this individual. He has started a sponsorship program for The Denver Children’s Hospital’s Medical Research Fund. Every race he participates in will raise money for this great organization. Feel free to contact Kyle directly for information on how you can help support his cause. Kyle’s mantra for this season is, “Go further, faster, and harder then you ever thought possible.” He may want to add to that “…and if anything gets in your way…TURN!”
David Kasnic-OES/BikeSource (Beginner 30-39)
David comes to OES having only a couple of races under his belt from the 2007 season. He is looking to find a grove with racing and further his abilities.
Marc Metzgar-OES/BikeSource (Non-racer, excited about the sport!)
New team member Marc Metzgar is a graduate of UCLA class of 75 and Loyola Law School class of 79. He is Executive Vice President and one of the owners of Granite Loan Management located in Centennial Colorado. He has been in Colorado for 12 years relocating from Los Angeles California. He has two daughters: Mason who is 11 and Margot who is 8. Marc started mountain biking one year ago at the age of 55. He was introduced to the sport by his business partner and colleague Larry Manchester. He has and continues to find mountain biking one of the most exciting and challenging endeavors he has taken up. He plans to enter his first race at the end of the summer as an amateur.
Taylor Schmidt-OES/BikeSource (Junior Sport 18 & under)
Taylor Schmidt is brand new to the Optimize Endurance Team this year, joining the team just this past May. Taylor’s love of bike racing began at the age of 10 when he started competing in BMX bike racing. In 2006 he decided to switch to mountain biking to further challenge himself and build his endurance. This will be Taylor’s third year racing mountain bikes, participating in both the Winter Park Epic Single Track series as well as the Mountain States Cup series. On the OES team Taylor is looking to push himself farther than ever before competing at the Junior Sport level.
Taylor is also an avid freeride snowboarder and skier where you will find him on the slopes of Mary Jane nearly every weekend during the winter season. In addition to his affinity for extreme outdoor sports, Taylor is also the drummer for the up and coming band
“
The Downstares”, playing various venues around the Denver area. In the fall of this year(2008), Taylor will begin his Junior year at Dakota Ridge High School in Littleton, Co.
Dan Wyszynski-OES/BikeSource (Sport 35-39)
Music: Metal (if it's not metal I don't want to hear it)
History:Been a lifelong bike rider, growing up in the flat lands of Illinois but lucky to live in a hilly suburb. Discovered real dirt trails many years ago and spent every available moment riding and honing skills. Moved to Colorado in May of 2000 to experience cycling on a whole different level. Here you have to be well rounded and have a an ability to climb hard and fast and keep going. From road to mountain there are no flats here. Race advantages are created on the climbs.
What I hope to accomplish:To get a well rounded dose of mountain and road bike racing, with an emphasis on Endurance MTB and Hill Climbs. To be trained and prepared to race. Much confidence comes from just being prepared. Then take that piece to racing to get the combined racing and training results that make me proud of time spent.
